mission statement

Space Below is a non profit organisation for artists, scientists, policy experts and local communities whose practice is focused on political, social and environmental concerns for the ocean, and the human and non-human communities who live in and with the sea.

We provides opportunities for people across a range of disciplines and backgrounds to connect and develop new collaborations and projects on a diversity of oceanic issues, with a particular focus on ocean justice.

We work with partners outside the arts who share a passion and concern for the oceans to nurture cross-discipline collaborations and provide opportunities to use art in new and unexpected ways.

Objectives:

  • To cultivate long-term, collaborative relationships with a global network of scientists, ocean law and policy experts, NGOs, and local and indigenous communities who are at the forefront of ocean-focused issues

  • To develop interdisciplinary art projects and exhibitions that have research, community collaborations and action at the heart.

  • To conduct research and produce written, verbal and artistic outputs that expose problems in contemporary ocean governance or outline alternative ways of governing.

  • To pioneer participatory community methodologies that root artistic practice in collective knowledge and cross-regional perspectives.

  • To hold collective events such as workshops and focus groups in order to bring multiple perspectives together, evolve interdisciplinary research, develop networks, and mobilise research into action.

  • To transcend traditional gallery spaces by designing projects that actively engage with public domains and directly inform ocean advocacy, policy, and public discourse.

  • To amplify the voices and frontline experiences of local and indigenous communities impacted by pressing marine issues, ensuring their insights drive the organisation's projects and networks.
